God said to Moses,
"I AM WHO I AM."
He said further, "Thus you
shall say to the Israelites,
'I AM has sent me to you.'"

~ Exodus 3:14

God has one name,
but many titles

God's name from Exodus, "'I AM' has sent me to you,"  sounds like it's missing a word. We may be tempted
to add to it. I AM: wonderful, amazing, mysterious, inexplicable, all-encompassing, un-surpass-able, extraordinary, infinite, merciful, the Love-of-our-life . . .
but we don't need to add anything.

GOD IS.

He IS the self-existent one, always present, always "being."

Throughout Sacred Scripture, God reveals more about Himself. Below are some examples of Who He Is and how He impacts our lives:

  • Abba - Father
    Galatians 4:6
says, "And because you are children, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, "Abba, Father!"
The Aramaic name "Abba" reveals love for God as our daddy.
  • Alpha & Omega - Beginning and the End
Revelations 22:13 says, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end."
Interestingly, A is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and Omega is the last. The name "Alpha & Omega" reveals that Jesus (the Second Person of God) is God's final Word for all eternity.
  • El Elyon - The God Most High
Colossians 1:16-17 says, "For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities of powers. All things were created through through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him, all things consist."
No goal, achievement, guilt, shame, addiction, desire, or despair is greater than God. He is transcendent. Give Him your everything and you'll have everything in Him.
  • El Roi - The God Who Sees
Sarah's maidservant Hagar revealed this name. She was alone and afraid, homeless in the wilderness, expectant with Abraham's child. An angel appeared, giving her comfort through God's tender mercy and love. Genesis 16:13 quotes Hagar, "You are El-roi," for she said, "Have I really seen God and remained alive after seeing him?"
He sees you. You are known.
  • El Shaddai - God Almighty
    Genesis 17:1-2
says, "When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am El Shaddai (Almighty God); walk before ME and be blameless. And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly."
This Hebrew name magnifies God's everlasting power and glory.
  • Jehovah (Yahweh or LORD) - The Self-Existent One
    Exodus 6:2-3
says, "God also spoke to Moses and said to him: 'I am the LORD. I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name  LORD I did not make myself known to them.'"
Where it says "Lord," God used the tetragrammation "YHWH," which is connected with the verb hayah, "to be." Because the name YHWH is so sacred to Jewish tradition, many will not even pronounce it. Out of respect, the word, translated from Hebrew "Yahweh" to Latinized "Jehovah," has been replaced with Hebrew "Adonai" or Greek "Kyrios" (both meaning LORD) in many Bibles, hymns, and liturgical resources. The word "LORD" must be capitalized to properly represent the divine name.
  • Jehovah Jireh - The Lord Will Provide
    Genesis 22
reveals God's trustworthy nature in the story where He stopped Abraham from sacrificing Isaac. "But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, 'Abraham, Abraham!'
God provided a ram caught in the thicket. Abraham was so thankful for the sacrificial lamb--an Old Covenant prefigurement fulfilled by Jesus, The Lamb of the New Covenant--he named the place Jehovah Jireh (Yahweh-Yireh).
We, too, can trust in and thank God--for He will provide.
  • Jehovah Mekoddishkem - The Lord Who Sets You Apart
Exodus 31:13 says, "You yourself are to speak to the Israelites: 'You shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, given in order that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you."
To be sanctified means to be holy or set apart from common use. Set Jehovah Mekoddishkem as a seal on your heart that you may be holy.
  • Jehovah Raah - The Lord is My Shepherd
David's Psalm 23:1-5 says, "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters; He restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for His name's sake."
I hope you're get a chance to read the entire psalm.
If you are lost, God will not forsake you. His goodness and mercy will follow you, until you are found.
  • Jehovah Rapha - God Who Heals
Exodus 15:26 quotes Moses, "He (the LORD) said, 'If you will listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give heed to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will not bring upon you any of the diseases that I brought upon the Egyptians; for I am the LORD Who heals you."
Maybe the healing you seek is different than the healing you need. Trust the Lord to know what healing is best for you. Through Jehovah Rapha, we can be healed for eternity.
  • Jehovah Shalom - The Lord Is Peace
Judges 6:23-24 says, "But the LORD said to him, 'Peace be to you; do not fear, you shall not die.' Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it, The LORD is peace. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrite.
We can experience peace in every circumstance through God. I pray you find contentment in Him.
  • Jehovah Shammah - The Lord is There
Psalm 139:7 asks, "Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your Presence?"
We can trust in His faithfulness. Nothing can distance us from Him--not discouragement, not distance, not death. He will never abandon us.
